What is Blepharoplasty Surgery?
Blepharoplasty is a surgical eyelid procedure, which may correct drooping upper eyelids and puffy bags below the eyes. These conditions may make an individual look older than he or she truly is, and may give the false appearance of being weary or fatigued. Drooping upper eyelids may even result in diminished peripheral vision due to limitations in the upper and lateral fields.
The Best Candidates for Blepharoplasty Surgery:
Blepharoplasty can enhance appearance and self-confidence, but it won’t necessarily change looks, or cause other people to treat patient differently. Before patient decide to have surgery, think carefully about the expectations and discuss them with surgeon.
The best candidates for eyelid surgery are men and women who are physically healthy, psychologically stable, and realistic in their expectations. Most are 35 or older, but if droopy, baggy eyelids run in the family, patient may decide to have eyelid surgery at an early age.
Types of Anesthesia for Blepharoplasty Surgery:
Eyelid surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia–which numbs the area around the eyes along with oral or intravenous sedatives. Patient will be awake during the surgery, but relaxed and insensitive to pain. (However, patient may feel some tugging or occasional discomfort.) Some surgeons prefer to use general anesthesia; in that case, patient will sleep through the operation.
The Blepharoplasty Surgery Procedure:
Most blepharoplasty procedures are completed under local anesthesia, with or without mild sedation. The procedure is typically performed in an out-patient facility or in the office. All four eyelids may be operated on or just the upper or lower ones. The procedure is typically painless, although patient may have occasional mild discomfort during the procedure. If surgeon elects for patient to have general anesthesia, patient will sleep through the procedure. The entire procedure may take from one to three hours, depending largely on whether all four lids are being operated on, or just the upper or lower ones.
Most commonly, the surgeon will make incisions along the natural creases of the upper eyelids, and just below the eyelashes for the lower eyelids. These incisions may be made with a traditional scalpel or a laser. The upper eyelid incisions extend from the upper inner corners of the eyelids to the “crow’s feet” region. The surgeon will remove excess skin, muscle, and fat as necessary to produce the desired result. The incisions are then closed with tiny sutures, which are often removed in about a week.
If the lower eyelids are being operated on, some surgeons elect to proceed with a transconjunctival blepharoplasty when excess skin does not need to be removed. This procedure entails a small incision only on the inside of the lower eyelid. This allows the removal of a fat pocket in the lower eyelid and prevents any visible scar, while still producing the desired result.
After Blepharoplasty Surgery:
The eyes will often be lubricated and covered with bandages after surgery. Pain and discomfort can be managed with oral medications. Unmanageable pain should be reported to doctor immediately. The doctor will also prescribe an antibiotic to prevent infection. Patient will receive a list of instructions to follow for a number of days, including
·the proper way to clean the eyes
·use of cold compresses
·use of lubricating eye drops
·head elevation
·no makeup
·no alcohol
·no television
·no contact lenses
Stitches are removed about a week after surgery. Bruising and swelling will continue to decrease after stitches are removed. Sunglasses and a protective sun block are required for several weeks. Normal activities can be resumed after about ten days. Strenuous activities such as lifting, bending, or exercise can be resumed after about three weeks.
New Appearance after Blepharoplasty Surgery:
After the first couple of weeks, patient will begin to see the aesthetic results of the surgery. However, patient won’t have the best results for up to 6 months following surgery. During this period, the incision lines will fade from slightly pink color to nearly invisible thin white lines. In most cases, patient may begin to wear makeup again (on the eyelids) about 7 to 10 days after the surgery.
The results are often dramatic and are likely to restore appearance to patients face. Patient may also enjoy improved peripheral vision. In most cases, the results last for many years or even a lifetime.
